Tumblr worthy curls every time! SO i did my friends hair a while ago and i took pics so i figured why not post it? It's also great for the holidays! This technique gives you tons of volume in all the right places and doesn't even take that long (standing time: 30 min) All you need is a curling iron (with a clip) in either 3/4", 1", or 11/4". (these sizes work the best)
Tools
Section 1:
So this is what i call a standard barrel curl. I did all the curls outward in this look so when starting, make sure the clip is facing opposite the way you will roll the iron. (when rolling away from the face, the clip goes towards the face)Hold for a few seconds then do the others. You should have 2 left and 2 right.
This is what it looks like when done. While still hot, pull the ends of the curl for a few seconds and then let go. It gives the curl a less "crunchy" pageant effect.
BOBBY PINS!! (you need many) Start rolling the curl back up in the direction it falls (to preserve the shape) and pin it to your head.
Section 2:
Section 3:
Take a section on one side (just slice another chunk on top of the previous ones and split it left and right) and split into about 3 mini sections, depending how much hair you have. Wrap a piece of hair around the barrel as shown above, keeping the hair flat to the iron, instead of letting it twist around itself. It should look like this <<<<< tip: don't unwrap the hair when you remove it from the iron, just hold the ends and gently let the hair slide off in its curled shape |
Section 4:
Do this same thing right beneath the first little curl and then again until you reach the end of hair It should look like that >>>>>>>>>> | This technique is a little tricky. YOU MUST HOLD THE ENDS OF THE PIECE YOU ARE CURLING AT ALL TIMES (or this will be very difficult) Start at the root, clamp the iron (hair going away from the face) and wrap hair around once. (it's like a precursor to the first technique we did) After a few seconds, release the hair and it should look like the hair above, with one curl rotation in it. |
If this wasn't very detailed and you're having trouble following this technique, watch this video, when explains it in depth
This technique is also great for shortish hair that looks like a dolls hair when spiral curled, like mine. It gives great waves and awesome second day curls

Final Steps:
NOTE: i didn't pin up the top layer curls (the video ones) because i wanted the look to seem more relaxed with some hidden volume underneath
So this is the final product! I just finger combed the top layers and tried to blend the curls together to create a more wavy effect but looking back this can be better achieved by gently brushing with a wide tooth comb or a paddle brush
That's it for this tutorial! I hope you like it and at least learned some new curling techniques and lemme know if you guys want any other kind of tutorial in the future!
Happy Holidays!
